On Our Way to Buzios

Tuesday, January 13, 2026

Jeremy started the morning drinking 2 beers. He is not a waster - and we can't take them on our flight to Rio de Janeiro, close to our next destination. Jeremy is setting the tone for the next few days … getting buzzed in Buzios.

Made famous to the world by Brigitte Bardot's visits in the 1960s, Buzios is one of Brazil's most sophisticated destinations. A long peninsula renowned for its turquoise-water beaches and pleasant year-round climate, it is the perfect setting for some down time and rest.

It is 95 F when we land in Rio. They are having a heat wave. Passing through, we catch a glimpse of Christ the Redeemer statue on our way out of town. Our barefoot driver doesn't speak a lick of English. The driving here is absolutely insane - imagine breaking every rule of the road. Crammed into the sweaty backseat with no A/C, this is going to be the longest 2 1/2 hours of my life.

Somehow, miraculously, both cars arrived safely to Buzios.  After getting settled into our home for the next 4 nights, we walked into town for dinner and drinks.

The heart of Buzios - the cobblestone streets, shops, and restaurants - ooze with charm

Trying Brazil’s national cocktail, the caipirinha. It is delicious! Traditionally lime, we also tried a pineapple version.

We are staying in a home overlooking the bay in Buzios. There are 7 bathrooms - one for each of us!

Logistics:
  • Our request for an uber driver for the 2 1/2 hour drive (from Rio's main airport to Buzios) was picked up immediately with a 4-minute wait time. Cost: $75 per car
  • We got kicked out of our Uber at the gas station so he could fill up his tank. Many Brazilians convert their cars to cheaper natural gas with a tank in the trunk. It is against the law to stay in the vehicle while being fueled with GNV.
  • The burgers at Praia do Carioca Buzios were delicious and reasonably priced.
