El Chalten’s Hike to Laguna Torre
El Chaltén requires "buffer days" in itineraries due to Patagonia's famously unpredictable weather, which can bring sunshine, rain, and strong winds (even snow) in a single day, often forcing hike cancellations for safety; building in extra days allows visitors to reschedule for better conditions. Our buffer day gave half our group a much-needed rest day while the other half went on a hike.
The hike to Laguna Torre is an incredibly popular hike because it is so much easier than the alternative option: Mt Fitz Roy. Although it is 11 miles long, it is mostly flat. If you enjoy hiking and being out in beautiful nature, it is totally worth it.
As it was raining on us for the first couple hours, I have to admit I was questioning our choice… until it stopped raining (and got hot) - then I forgot all about the rain.
Walking through lenga forests and beside the raging Río Fitz Roy is a hiker's treat
Getting to the shores of Laguna Torre, you'll find up-close views of the Torre Massif and icebergs floating in the glacial lake.
Getting to Laguna Torre and seeing its icebergs up close is surreal. The pictures don't give the moment it's true justice.
The flies here are huge and like to hitchhike. Chris spied one freeloading on my hat. Determined to smash it to smithereens, he wacked me real good on the head. And apparently the quick show was pretty entertaining to Jeremy!
After the hike we all settled down at one of the many outdoor bars along the main street. Jeremy and Chris both were getting Bend (Oregon) vibes. I enjoyed the relaxed feel of El Chalten and that it wasn't at all crowded with visitors (even though its reason for existence is tourism).
"I like this day a lot," said Jeremy.
El Chaltén Logistics:
- El Chaltén is isolated from mobile data. If you are within 1/2 mile of town, you can use Movistar or Claro. On the 2 hour drive between El Calafate and El Chaltén, there is one single WiFi zone.
- Tap water and river water is safe to drink
- Toilet paper should be placed in a trash bin - not the toilet
